Dental hygienists need a variety of resources to help them assist their patient/client with quitting smoking. The objectives as defined by the Smoking Cessation Initiative are to develop a new and effective approach. The Ask Advise Refer program is designed to be a new program that dental hygienists can easily integrate into their smoking cessation efforts.
By referring their patient/client to a Quitline, dental hygienists are incorporating all 5 A’s (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) of the Smoking Cessation Clinical Practice Guidelines. Quitlines have proven to be one of the more effective methods of promoting smoking cessation. The United States Department of Health and Human Services (U.S. Dept of HHS) has recognized the overwhelming success of Quitlines and is dedicated to providing every citizen in every state with this important tool.
